The collection consists of materials representing the full scope of Elevitch's writing and editing career, from his early student writings to manuscripts and production materials for his published works. The collection also includes correspondence and other materials relating to Elevitch's activities in editing and publishing literary magazines, and his participation in the founding of ALMA, as well as Elevitch's personal collection of literary magazines and anthologies, focusing on his interest in experimental forms of contemporary writing.

Morton D. Elevitch was born in Duluth, Minnesota and received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, where he was a writer, cartoonist and editor for several student publications. After spending some time teaching and travelling in Europe, Elevitch founded the literary magazine First person, and was a founding member of the Association of Literary Magazines of America (ALMA).
